The family ages together on the cusp of the year

So my ACD Heeler Lucy girl is aging every day. Turns out the liquid Metacam which helped a lot with her pain also makes her dizzy and stumble. All her systems are less able to cope with rapid movement. Mainly in the house she's a bed potato, with one or two breaks for three minutes of enthusiastic toy play and couch zooming.

Every day Lucy & MyGuy go to the park or the service road by the golf course. MyGuy lifts her up into the car, which she resents, and she wobbles down to explore the world. As one of my neighbors said, she doesn't go for a walk so much as go for a smell. The primary target of Lucy's sniffs & snorfles is rodents, in particular, mice.

Today she caught one. She was so proud of herself she disdained the 10-block ride home in the car, preferring to swagger down the path instead, displaying her no-longer-squeaking toy to all and sundry.

MyGuy thought she'd left it behind, but she'd tricked him. Just now she came in from the yard, walking in the loudest, boldest, are you looking at me? sneaky posture possible. Because the now all-black, deeply fragrant mouse was in her mouth again and she wanted to put it in a special place.

Eventually she traded for a bunch of biscuits, but she's still cruising all the corners in case she'd succeeded and merely forgotten where she'd left it.

Old dogs are good companions as I age. I don't know if maybe I've left some book reviews or life plan or half-made jewelry in a corner somewhere. Better go check.

comments
