Yeah, I kind of feel like we (internet culture, especially fandom internet culture) are starting to lose sight of the whole concept of having different social spaces for different purposes. But that’s IMPORTANT! You don’t complain about your boss at work, but you do need somewhere to vent about the corporate stupidity (the neighborhood bar; your living room; a phone call to your sister) or the frustration will eat you alive. It seems to me that, between being able to google people’s names and the lack of a private function on places like tumblr, we’ve stopped even trying to have separate venting spaces and places for having persuasive discussions about things, and we’ve started thinking of it as a social virtue not to switch tone and register between different social spaces. But part of getting along with each other socially is not going into every conversation on the same level as you’d go into a gripefest with a bunch of like-minded and non-judgmental friends.

Since I left the working world behind in 1993, I need reminding that spewing TMI at everyone I meet doesn't always work.
