Just found a great episode on 20,000 Hz, a favorite podcast of mine.

SUBTITLES ON: WHY IS MOVIE DIALOGUE SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?

Answer at [community profile] access_fandom, a comm I co-mod where we talk about making sure the full fandom experience works for all of us, no matter how our bodyminds work. Like many DW comms, it hosts useful knowledge going back a while, and is always ready to be revived.

I always enjoy the wide variety of postcards which appear regularly from [personal profile] fflo. Tuesday, [personal profile] fflo posted about the "Best Wrong Answers" to LearnedLeague. These are a series of punchline-worthy responses to Jeopardy!-style questions. For example:

In photography, the overall brightness of an image is determined by the "exposure triangle" of aperture, shutter speed, and a third factor which is a measure of the sensitivity of the camera's sensor (or the film) to light. This third factor is known as what?

  • REMEMBERING TO TAKE THE LENS CAP OFF

Even though I got online before the WWW, I’d never heard of LearnedLeague, which is a very dedicated group of trivia fiends. Here’s what I found:

Like any tight-knit community, there’s a ton of jargon. Participants are called LLamas (the double L matching Learned League). Membership is by invite only, though there is some public content at
LearnedLeague.com

Some of the world-readable "Best Worst Answer" tallies follow the URL pattern

https://learnedleague.com/hist/awards/100.php

Where 100 references the season—I had some fun plugging in random numbers.

From season 97:

A Wind in the Door (1973), A Swiftly Tilting Planet (1978), and Many Waters (1986) continue the story first told by author Madeleine L'Engle in what 1962 novel?

There are hundreds of folks posting about their lives, their likes, their dreams, their fandoms thanks to the low-key [community profile] snowflake_challenge. It's a no-pressure event: participating at their own rates, in their own journals, the challengers (or is that the snowflakes) link back to the comm so you can roll around in lovely fannish feelings!

Detached two story house with flat green siding highlighted with light gray green shutters and limestone veneer

Two streets away from us is this mid-1940s detached two-story house with bay window and one-car garage. Wooden siding is painted flat green, decorative shutters are lighter green-gray, yellow-gray limestone veneer on first floor.

Good news: the brutal cold has passed.
Bad news: it’s warm enough for the snow to get dirty.
Who knows: did my blog layout inspire these folks to repaint their house, or did their house inspire my blog layout?

How’s by you? What inspires your DW layout? Is your snow getting dirty or all melted?

It's often been said (even by me) that the Corgi phenotype is so strong that when Corgis create mixed breed dogs, they look like "Corgis in costumes."

I'm delighted to report there's a Reddit sub devoted entirely to pictures of these costumed wonders: no matter whether the outgroup dog is a chihuahua or a husky, the dog has a long body, short legs, and a definite attitude.

If you saw a cornstarch slurry in science class -- often called "oobleck" -- you've experienced a "non-Newtonian liquid." That's a substance which changes its structure based on pressure. A local industrial pump manufacturer does a lovely job explaining the varieties:

Nursing Clio continues to deliver accessible historical perspective on the social impacts of medicine, in this case, Black nurses during the US Vietnam war:

[Elizabeth Allen]’s motivation for joining the war effort came from the same deep well of solidarity within the Black community that produced the anti-War activism of Angela Davis and Malcolm X. Allen expanded on her ideological justification for volunteering: “It’s not for me to decide as to the rightness or the wrongness of the war, my decision was what was the best possible care I could give.”

I wrote these questions!

Do you like to reply to every comment in your journal?

I definitely try to, since the primary purpose of my journal is participating in the world. I like s-l-o-w conversations, which is why DW is the platform for me.

What type of post gets the most/least responses in your journal?

Polls! If you want traffic, post a poll (but then you need a paid account to do it). Second are “droll knows much” questions, especially when well phrased.

Media reviews get the least responses.

What do you do when a new person first comments in your journal?

I jump to their profile, see what we have in common. When there’s an overlap, I’ll mention it in my reply and follow them. When there isn’t an overlap, I’ll thank them for commenting.

When you’re reading someone else’s journal, do you read every comment before adding your own?

When there are fewer than 25 comments, yes. If there are more, I’ll skim the top level ones before putting in my two cents.

When is “too late” to reply to an entry?

NEVER! I back-read new folks all the time–I’ve piped up on six year old posts.

s-l-o-w conversations for the win

I love that Dreamwidth provides a connection (when I can comment) and a view (when I can't) to the various, swirling minds of my dwircle. I learn from folks who are leaders, and those striving to become leaders, and those who struggle internally and externally.

I worry that exposing my struggles will disgust my readers. That's why I have forty drafted essays which I can't delete and can't post.

Maybe I would be better of if I gaffiated?
