ROAD LOG: 12 - 15 February

( Amarillo to Claremore OK )Wednesday
( Claremore to Pontoon Beach IL )Thursday
( Pontoon Beach to Madison WI )Final Thoughts
It was nifty to visit Albuquerque, but we sure wouldn’t want to live there.
The hellscape curb ramps mean that it’s a very car-dependent city. The bus service is at Madison’s level although it’s four times the population. It’s economically depressed and it makes us depressed. Perhaps it's all the commercial facilities for rent (at least half). The sun is abundant, and the people we encountered were very friendly.
Interstate highways are about getting somewhere else. Along our journey, drivers were targeted by the immediate needs–toilets, food, gas, sleeping–and relentless attempts to sell the past. Antiques, vintage, flea markets. It’s oh-so-American to have a tourist attraction based on the fact that the road used to go there: that is to say “historic route 66,“ which paralleled our route. Every town that still maintained a billboard advertised a route-66 related museum, whether it was automobiles or diner signs or those lighters we're going to investigate real soon now.
Hum along to "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" (lyrics at the link) ( Bobby Troup wrote, scores have made it famous )

ABQ LOG: 4 - 8 February
Monday, February 12th, 2018 06:29 pmMyGuy, who is the King of Thrifting, escorts me to a Savers, and demonstrates his magic skills by locating two heavy cotton jackets, a cashmere/cotton scarf, a merino wool scarf, an excellent sunhat in just the shape I’ve been seeking, and a pair of just-broken-in but not-worn Sanita1 clogs in my size. Under $50 for the lot.
5 Monday: Joyful Views
Swim at Highland Pool. Still friendly people, and the water’s warmer.
I stopped by Walmart for bandages and I left my wallet behind at the checkout desk. It’s gone forever. The good news is I didn’t lose my credit card, there wasn’t much cash in it, and the rest is relatively easy to recreate.

6 Tuesday More Mercantilism
I went bead-shopping with my walker
- one expensive place going out of business, and it deserves to.
- one fabulous place–The Beaded IRIS–has a lovely collection of vintage beads as well as lots of JN seeds.
- amazing food at An Hy Quan4, an innovative vegan/vegetarian place. Huge portions, low prices, great service, novel tastes.
7 Wednesday
- Swam at Highland. I’m “recognized” for the second time by someone who’s confused me with another wheelchair user.
- Lazing around reading & eating.
8 Thursday
- Got a foldable straw sunhat that stays on in 10mph breezes without a cord.
- We visited the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center for almost 2 hours (with my walker) and it was worth the crash the next day.

Sunday, February 11th, 2018 09:10 amI’ve been logging my days. Here’re our nights!
Between four and six pm, we come home, snack, and think about dinner. When we’re done with that, it’s time to watch TV!
We sped through the second season of Killjoys. ( for some reason I cannot remember the name: I always say Misfits instead )
Thanks to decemberthirty’s recommendation, we started watching The Crown. ( we can't turn our heads away )
ABQ Log: 1-3 February 2018
Tuesday, February 6th, 2018 09:10 amThursday
Swim at West Mesa Pool.
( some people visit museums I tour natatoria )
And that was it for Thursday, because I did too much on Wednesday and was exhausted.
Friday
Browsed various places with my walker.
Ate at Thai Vegan, one of many vegan restaurants in the city. They were vague about gluten, and I think I got some.
Napping, drowsing, snoozing.
Saturday
Stopped by “Sweet Nothings,” a GF bakery. ( nifty form factor for bread )
Swam at Sandia pool ( another high-school adjacent facility )
Typically fabulous lunch from MyGuy: The Salad Meal with avocado chunks, cucumbers, romaine, scallions, and cold shrimp; dressed with olive oil and lemon juice.
Walk at Petroglyph National Monument Volcanoes ( brief and impressive )
Back to walk El Paseo del Bosque north from Tingley Beach, with dog in tow. ( pebbles sand iron )

Wednesday
Home for a nap, then our old standby, the cemetery walk. Cemeteries are for the living to visit, yes? In Historic Fairview Cemetery, there are several signs warning against trespassers. Parts of it were created without any funds for "perpetual care," so they're pretty ratty--tipped and chipped vertical headstones. Other parts are clearly well kept: there are flat markers--granite and brass--as well as upright granite markers.** We saw two set-asides blessed as Greek Orthodox and Jewish.
I'm hoping you can tell me why a Vietnamese couple would have a headstone in what looks like Chinese.
Most hideous was the recent installation of a balloon-themed outdoor columbarium.^ The hyper-realistic hot-air balloon, complete with woven basket below, does not lend itself to the medium of stone. Perhaps that's why this statue commands a circle of black granite that's empty of names?
( ugly hot air balloon structure )
This flat marker gave me the biggest thrill. Bea L Weber--I assume she's a pilot from the plane in the corner--anticipates her own death. She lists her "Arrival Date" but the "Day of Departure" is blank. An exceptionally languid cat-creature guards that empty spot, while her catch phrase is "I dance among the stars."
( for bead enthusiasts: go to Thomason Stone )
* Senior/disabled/vet
** Notable since we come from the land of limestone markers, which become unreadable after a century of rain.
^ A structure with niches to house cremated bodies in urns.
^^ Sadly, bad Chinese-origin generic stone dyed blue almost spoiled me for the good stuff.
Super Blue Moon Eclipse 1200 - 1400 GMT Jan 31
Tuesday, January 30th, 2018 04:33 pmEarly tomorrow morning–5 am to 7 am MST–the moon as seen from Albuquerque is doing four amazing things.
- It’s full
- It’s blue (second full this month)
- It’s super (at perigee, closest point to earth in its orbit)
- It’s blood (because lunar eclipse)

That's right: PubMed has almost five times as many clinical trials on male sexual pleasure as it has on female sexual pain. And why? Because we live in a culture that sees female pain as normal and male pleasure as a right.

Albuquerque is indeed SUNNY and WARM. (Well, 49° is plenty warm enough for me, really. It's just cool enough that hot flashes don't matter.) MyGuy and Bella have found a suitable dog park. The local co-op is lovely, a 10-minute stroll away, and its deli does right by the ingredients. We scoped out the local pool and I will report tomorrow.

Katrina's Impact on Mississippi Gulf Coast
Wednesday, January 18th, 2017 12:18 pmUntil we arrived I didn't understand that Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast even harder than New Orleans. ( before and after photos and videos )
Days 5 & 6: Active relaxing
Tuesday, January 17th, 2017 10:55 amSunday I rolled to the Gulf Coast YMCA branch. The water was deliciously warm at 85°. I neglected to bring my flippers, so only swam 8 lengths in my allotted time, but that's why I exercise to time, not distance.
The pool may be filled with filtered sea water: it's certainly soft enough.
I streamed the first half hour of the final Sherlock to my massive disappointment. As always, plaidadder nails it
begin quote
I think that I may fairly make two postulata:http://plaidadder.tumblr.com/post/155952044114/the-perfect-metaphor-the-final-problem-and-the
- 1) Whatever about series 5, this episode was designed to be the last episode of Sherlock that Moffat and Gatiss would make.
- 2) It should be.
end quote
We walked over Mississippi Sound on the 2 mile bridge connecting Biloxi and Ocean Springs. The view, the sun, the breeze, were exhilarating. My traditional direct attention to the water photo memorializes one stop:
( Sitting on the walkway, framed by intense blue sky, woman in powerchair points to Mississippi Sound )Home to nap, and finish The Final Problem. Wow, that was terrible. (As with most Sherlock canon, there were a handful of wonderful moments, but...thank god for fanfic. I heartily recommend all of plaidadder's.)
We then drove back to Biloxi to assess what was where. The beachside road is furnished with a wide array of architecture: brick Waffle Houses; massive casinos; 1940s apartment buildings; humble 900 sq ft shotgun houses, Frank Gehry's typically bizarre Ohr-O'Keefe Museum, and the Biloxi Visitor's Center, a majestic three-story former mansion.
In my brief time here, I've seen scores of historical markers, displays, websites, pamphlets. Based solely on the ones I've seen, the only people on the Gulf Coast have been the immigrant waves of French, English, Spanish, and "Americans." Africans aren't mentioned anywhere. This is what it looks like to be written out of the narrative.
The third Monday in January has officially been "Robert E Lee's Birthday" in Mississippi, until this year. Twitter shaming played a part in the Biloxi City Council voting unanimously to bring the holiday in line with the Federal designation of Martin Luther King's Birthday.
We finished our day with a promising but ultimately dull meal at Mosaic. MyGuy liked his pulled-pork quesadilla. My ceviche & rice-stuffed portobello was tasty, but not enough to write home about, although I seem to have done so.
Time to swim!
Day Four: settling in to Ocean Springs
Sunday, January 15th, 2017 12:35 pmOur little house is in one of the oldest parts of town, but the dwellings are so modest that it hasn't been gentrified. Next-door is condemned & they're living in their garage.
I rolled to a Farmer's Market — tragically no fresh greens, but OMG fresh pralines, a novelty almost as delicious as chocolate. (Butter, cream, pecans, sugar.) The sidewalks are just wide enough for my chair, around 36in. They've done an excellent job maintaining flatness considering the wealth of old, rooted trees. There was only one place I got airborne.
Late lunch at a pho restaurant called Pho. Tasty but not cosmic.
There's a concrete beach walk — around 25 yards from the low-tide line. After a suitable post-prandial nap, I was able to use my rolling walker for a stroll down to the "harbor" (a channel cut in to maximize water access).
Here's a Google beach view where I started:
We had more clouds so more colors in our sunset appreciation, but this time-lapse provides a taste: ( described sunset video shot looking SSW )
Day 3: to Ocean Springs, MS
Sunday, January 15th, 2017 12:17 pm- Cross-country on US Hwy 49, two-lane highway running through the centers of many small towns. We had to pause for wide loads and very wide loads, both trailers straddling the full roadway. Fortunately, no tractors.
- Destination at 4:30, in time for clearing skies and a lovely sunset. Our little house is delightful! <grumpy>(Except the bed. No bed is as good as my bed.) </grumpy>
- Bella was pleased by the fenced yard, but truly astounded by not just a squirrel house, but a weathered tree providing a squirrel apartment building.
- MyGuy magically shopped & cooked an omelette. Then we all fell into bed and slept hard.
Day 1: to Effingham, IL
Thursday, January 12th, 2017 07:02 am- smooth trip down Hwy 51, half in mysterious yet not scary fog. At times visibility was less than two semi trucks.
- Sixty degrees on arrival! No need for coats!
- motel w: indoor pool, w/c access, accepts dogs are not ubiquitous. This Fairfield Inn was too hot, bed too soft, and stinking of floral air freshener. Best news: we’re leaving it shortly.
- Reliably tasty and gluten free: Chipotle. Order on line, $15 to fill up two hungriest.
- Bella was unsettled, but accepted mysterious change in routine with glares and minimal complaint.
