Ugh I’ve got a chest cold which could mean endless coughing. The good news is I have a recliner for sleeping mostly upright, and copious amounts of guaifenesin-pills-and-water, and the right sort of social network.

My public library’s Kanopy subscription provided two profound films, both under nine minutes:

  • CODA is an animated short from 2015. This Irish masterpiece follows a lost soul’s encounter with death. Pro captions, no audio description, no gore. Watch on YouTube or stream here )

  • Bacon & God’s Wrath meditates on loss of faith when Razie Brownstone, at age 92, tries bacon for the first time. CONTAINS: Very lifelike animated dead pig’s head, racist autocomplete results, emesis mentioned. Watch on YouTube without captions or stream here )

...how would Christian practices be orientalized? @spacevinci provides a snappy demonstration. Their persona is deeply involved in Jewish ritual, channeling the supremely self-confident attitude that power enables.

My family is Jewish; I was raised in a strictly atheist household. I never attended temple or Sabbath dinners. @spacevinci's disinterest in the timing, pronunciation, or meaning of Christian observances resonates with my experience growing up -- Christians assumed I'd know all about their prayers, holidays, and traditions.

I am not a person, I’m 3 possums in a coat
And we like to claim it’s GUCCI, but we got it from a goat
Say it’s vintage or it’s avant-garde, whatever boats your float
I don’t care, I’m not a person, I’m 3 possums in a coat

an obituary over the weekend introduces me to a writer worth finding )
begin quote When filling out a form for the Ministry of Justice that asked [the deceased woman] to report any losses inflicted by her husband’s arrest and execution, Ms. Kovaly drew up a list that included “loss of honor,” “loss of health” and “loss of faith in the Party and in justice.” Only at the end of her 10-item list did she write “loss of property.”

“I carry the past inside me like an accordion, like a book of picture postcards that people bring home as souvenirs from foreign cities, small and neat,” she wrote in her memoir. “But all it takes is to lift one corner of the top card for an endless snake to escape, zigzag joined to zigzag, the sign of the viper, and instantly all the pictures line up before my eyes.” quote ends

Hida Kovaly was a Czech woman of letters, who translated the "great men" of the 20th century from English and German into her native tongue. She lived through her country's occupation and destruction by two totalitatian regimes, and died there free.

A unauthorized scanned reproduction of a CPJ rave review essay by a U.S. think-tanker meditates on the importance of understanding the delicious appeal and the ultimate weakness of totalitarianisms, which we may think we already understand. But could it hurt to learn more? Significant portions of that same article are in text in this blog post. There's a typically detailed and footnoted review from the wonders that is the H- lists (in this case founding mama H-NET)

While I want to steer a course away from an unthinking elder-worship, most people who have survived that long have learned many things worth learning. (While having had an exceptionally strong body & mind as well access to food and travel at crucial times.) There are literally uncountable millions of 90-yr-olds whose wisdom we'll never hear from the short and brutal 20th Century.

The air can fail us along several dimensions. In addition to being stinky, it can have lumpy bits—such as dust and particles––or toxic bits—such as poisons or radioactivity. In addition to a super-sensitive sniffer, I have reactive airways. Any bits make me cough and prevent me from breathing. Unfortunately, we're having an ORANGE particle alert tomorrow in my part of the world. I'm glad I can stay home. As is probably the case all around the U.S., and certainly in Mexico, the worst air conditions are experienced by workers waiting outside for public transportation.

Good bye & good riddance to 2009. The best part of the year was spending time with fangirls; the worst was spending time with myself.

Onward and upward! [personal profile] were_duck came over today so we cooked. Baked latkes—a combo of sweet potato, Yukon gold potato & zuchinni—very tasty. But oil is the point of latkes, and they would have been tastier fried in lots of it. Any excuse to top something with pineapple salsa is outstanding, and for sheer perversity the accompanying sauteed pork tenderloin in sesame oil couldn't be beat.

Dessert was gluten free double chocolate biscotti. They were super tasty, and I'll post the recipe after I try a few adjustments to make the texture correct. I was pleased that a recipe with no eggs and no oil could somehow hang together: it's the magic of almond meal!

(Too hungry to take pix.)

Full disclosure: we are 100% bah humbug at our house. I'm culturally Jewish and personally athiest. MyGuy was double-dipped Baptized and left organized religion with junior high. Christmas means Asian food and avoiding family members. No presents, no singing, no hits, no runs, no errors.

When we started listening to A Prairie Home Companion in 1977, it was cool and retro. Unfortunately Garrison Keillor decided around a decade ago that he could really sing, and now it's just annoying.

Even worse was his column this week asking the non-Christians to stay away from Christmas. In particular, why are these annoying Jews writing those annoyingly secular holiday tunes (like White Christmas and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer).

That bastion of Hebraic effete East-coast elitism, the NYTimes, followed up with Michael Feinstein's story of complaints because his Christmas program included too many Jewish songs.

Nicely matched, both linked at this TIME blog from James Poniewozik's Christmas is Too Jewish? Oy Vey.

But the real reason to follow the link is the fabulous Saturday Night Live animation, where the genuine Darleen Love sings "Christmas Time for the Jews" in all her Motown glory.
