jesse_the_k: Due South's RayK and Fraser both rubbing their foreheads (dS F/K headache)
I've always enjoyed winter weather, and that's one of the reasons I was drawn to Due South. Canonically, Fraser grew up in Tuktoyaktuk, the "End of the Road" coastal hamlet on the Beaufort Sea.

I encountered Tuk again today in Nadim Roberts' heartbreaking essay from GRANTA. They've built a hard road highway from Inuvik to Tuk; the article is about why Tuk residents call it "Bernard's Highway."

CONTAINS: Generations of physical, sexual, social abuse of indigenous people )
jesse_the_k: Ray Kowalski is happy to be alive, surrounded by yellow rubber ducks (dS RayK's ducks)
It's been a slow, boring, sleepy time. It's been a horrifying, fast, annoying time. It's been a puzzling time, it's been a fannish time. To wit:

1. Out on the town, sitting in the littlest room reading fanfic on the throne (as I do) and I dropped my iPod touch. Damage! Shining Knight in Wool Armor! Apple does good. )

2. It was rainy, so I was wearing my wheelchair rain cape. Who knew I'd kiss death? )

3. Saw the endocrinologist. T3 high, T4 low, TSH low. End may be in sight )

4. I won a drawing from the talented artist known as [personal profile] chkc in a successful fannish scheme to get [personal profile] anatsuno to Australia. Her SGA chibis are things of wonder. Look what she drew for me!!!! )
jesse_the_k: Due South's RayK and Fraser both rubbing their foreheads (dS F/K headache)
No more denial from this corner: I have developed fangirl cataracts. While I was browsing this collection of 20 never-before seen LIFE photographs of Steve McQueen from 1963, all I could see in that lithe form was CKR playing RayK dreaming he's Steve McQueen.

(link goes to totally undescribed AJAX-heavy photo gallery.)

There is even, [personal profile] dira fans take note, a shot of battered hands!
jesse_the_k: Panda doll wearing black eye mask, hands up in the spotlight, dropping money bag on floor (bandit panda)
I've been enjoying podfics -- fanfics read aloud by fans (sometimes, but rarely, the fic's writer). Flannel-PJ type podfics really help me get to sleep.

I have a lot of experience narrating books, articles, and manuals for readers with print impairments, but podfic is *different*. I lack any creative writing skills, so podficcing looks like one way I could contribute to fandom.
So I'm soliciting beta readers for my first podfic )

Reply and I'll message you the MP3 link. Any comments you have to offer would be swell -- I'm a rank beginner!

Meta Fic Poetry

So, fanfic is pretty cool, but fanfic poetry is awesome.

Here's The Love Song of S Ray Kowalski, a totally-in-character Fraser/RayK post-CotW fic that just so happens to be an hilarious send-up of T.S. Elliot's moody muggle, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Open that sucker up in another tab, so you can appreciate what a great job [livejournal.com profile] metaphoracle did.

So I squeed about this to [livejournal.com profile] were_duck, and she kindly pointed me to an even more meta poem. "Searching" by [livejournal.com profile] linabean recreates that lost feeling one has when seeking help on a ficfinders/recfinders community, in this case Stargate: Atlantis.

MOAR! I WANT MOAR!

According to the NYTimes:
After his victory in a judo match, the athlete thrust his arms into the air in an elated V — the universal symbol of triumph, something he had seen other athletes do thousands of times. Except for one thing: he couldn’t see.

Yet again, the meaning of "normal" behaviors is defined by the action of the atypical. This is one of the reasons I find disability studies so intriguing.

(Yes, the icon is Paul Gross & his arms, but more T than \o/)

The creativity that fandom nurtures and celebrates makes me grin hard.

E. frakkin' G.:

  • [livejournal.com profile] luzula writes excellent fanfic, and creates mellifluous podfic as well. (Particularly impressive since English is not her native language.) I especially adore Shifting and Running, both set in a due South AU where lycanthropy runs in the Fraser family.

  • This brought to mind [livejournal.com profile] truepenny and [livejournal.com profile] matociquala's slash-o-riffic novel A Companion to Wolves. I checked [livejournal.com profile] truepenny's journal to see if there was an excerpt, and found this intriguing phrase: mix them and my world dissolves.

  • Which jumped me to [livejournal.com profile] petronelle's spot-on, funny, and deeply disturbing crossover between due South and A Companion to Wolves. The more you know about each canon, the funnier this story is, but it's pretty damn wonderful all on its ownsome.

As these wonderful women piece together tropes and feelings and flights of fancy, they carry on the glorious tradition of the quiltmakers and herbalists: making art and pleasure in community.

My very first Canadian fandom was Radio Canada International. When I first got ill, I spent almost a year horizontal, and my shortwave radio brought sanity and variety to my bedside.

The CBC often presents intriguing weirdnesses on the radio in the summer. This year it's "The Late Show," where Gordon Pinsent hosts long-form documentary obituaries on CBC Radio One.

In a perfect 6 degree mashup, last week's (repeated this Sunday) show explores a hard-headed outdoorsman named Peter Brock.

I can't link directly to the player, but you can hear the show from that page.
Peter Brock was many things in life. A writer, a film-maker, a teacher, a pilot, a pianist. And a modern day explorer. He was preoccupied with one goal — a goal both treacherous and exhilarating. And that was to sail his boat — a boat he built — through the almost impenetrable ice of the Northwest Passage. Follow Peter Brock's journey…to its tragic end.

Sorry, but most of these links will probably be dead by 1-Sept-08

with the writing of a creative whirlwind named [livejournal.com profile] j_s_cavalcante and I've just spent a happy morning reading every work of her due South F/K oeuvre.

Befitting a crush, I also got up-to-date on her entire LJ, and so stumbled on this ancient meme, which was news to—and entirely appropriate for—me:

A very "special" dictionary. by lily22
    Look up:
Definition:A surge of panic, esp. as experienced when the negatives of procrastination are realized.

Apposite because, even though I've written volumes in the past, in the last few years writing anything has turned into an all-anxious, all-nightmare struggle. I'm kinda hoping that writing within the highly stylized realm of fanfic might be a morale-builder, but I have to fret about it for a couple months first.

... there's always my fandom to keep me smiling.

So maybe this is OK. It's a lovely summer day, my AirPort extends to the recliner on the back patio, Lucy is reclining in the sun with her paws crossed, MyGuy is rebuilding a table saw, and the robin has stopped beating her head against the window.

    Thanks for the kind words...

I'll confess that due South fandom has completely eaten my brain.

There are so many great writers in this fandom that there are hundreds of meaty rec posts devoted to single sub-sub-genres. This is not one of them. Today, I must sing the praises of just one fic, which includes the deathless sentence:

“Of course, my foot typing is much better than my footwriting, but the typewriter’s currently being repaired.”

...[livejournal.com profile] china_shop's Fraser/Ray K PG romance wherein assistive technology meet slash, and much hilarity ensues.

I've relentlessly pimped Due South to [livejournal.com profile] sasha_feather in person, so here's the recs post I promised.

This took so long because I fail at resisting the urge to read 100 new fics just in case they need reccing as well

due South fandom is almost 15 years old, enough time for all the cliches to have been explored. The packed fanon base layer supports writers exploring new techniques, new insights, new joys & sorrows. At the end, links point back to a decade's worth of great recs from the first decade. Here I'll trend to newer writers, 100% RayK/Fraser, 80% slash.
