jesse_the_k: cross-eyed sheep tongue extended (sheep blep)

Thanks, [personal profile] pauraque for giving me S for this six-question meme.

Something I hate

scented shampoo, soap, or similar substances. Fragrances like these trigger coughing fits and sometimes migraines. Weirdly, I developed this sensitivity after I quit smoking 10-15 cigarettes/day.

Something I love

sencha green tea, in particular Telsaan Sencha Spring Shizuoka, tragically out of stock

Somewhere I have been

Skópun, Sandoy, Føroyar (Faroe Islands).

more about that tripIn 1971, I visited my sister & her husband for two weeks. He was studying Skópun and its people for his PhD in anthropology. She was studying everything in sight. My sister wrote a novel about it and my former-brother-in-law wrote several scholarly books. I took many wild ferry rides, snacked on skerpikjøt (fermented lamb) and turranfisk (fermented fish), and admired the beauty and strangeness of these tiny islands in the middle of the Atlantic. This was decades before the first undersea roundabout connected most of the Faroe Islands with roads.

Somewhere I would like to go

Shetland Islands, Scotland or Svalbard, Norway, especially during midnight sun season.

Someone I know

[personal profile] sasha_feather! I introduced her to a disability rights framework at WisCon. She enthusiastically joined in and succeeded me as WisCon Access Chair. She introduced me to Stargate Atlantis thence LJ thence DW fandom. We’ve had weekly lunches almost continuously for more than a decade.

Favorite movie

I'm drawing a complete blank. I loved Miyazaki's Spirited Away when it first came out--I should rewatch and see if still shines.

… witnessing us enjoying each other’s work.

I was so charmed this morning when I listened to [personal profile] anatsuno's delicious podfic of [archiveofourown.org profile] busaikko’s kind, sweet gen-ish fic A Mark of Time, where asexual John and sexual athlete Rodney find a happy togetherness in fursuits.

As I left a comment on [archiveofourown.org profile] busaikko’s fic (which includes useful background on how/why furries are reviled, and why that’s a bad idea), I learned that it had inspired [archiveofourown.org profile] bomberqueen17 to mention furry cuddling in an Atlantis-wide intranet RPS archive as part of her Two-Body Problem (WIP) series.

That fic is I ship it and it stands alone. [archiveofourown.org profile] bomberqueen17 creates an OFC, eager to join a gate team, who inadvertently goes on a fool's errand to sign up with Lorne, since he’s rumored to do all of Shepherd’s scutwork. Which ends up with a fake McShep kiss to give the new kids something to gossip about, as well as a true McShep kiss that’s what they deserve.

Oolon Colluphid Was Right by [archiveofourown.org profile] melannen is an excellent Stargate Atlantis story which dances with the common SFF trope of the "universal translator," which magics away the very real issue of language and culture.

I delighted in the narrative conceit, and was lost in many of the geek references. Thankfully [personal profile] sophia_sol provides a Terran/Atlantean translation:

This will deeply appeal to 12-year-old fans of Stargate Atlantis, McShep Ship Division, and their elder sistern. Otherwise, nothing to see here except this LINK

I've been feeling particularly loathesome lately. Details if you dare )

Meantime I've been laying around reading SGA fanfic.
Two enthusiastic, short recs await )

I've been reading SGA for two years now, and I guess that means I'm "in the fandom."

Oh, the places it takes me!

Places I didn't even know existed. Like this sweet, funny, punny, ethical, sexy, thought-provoking story called "Kidentity" from an anonymous kink meme. Contains underage sex: Rodney's current personality & cognition is handwaved into the body of a 12-year-old.

Since it's anon, I don't know who to thank. Anon claims to be new to SGA fandom; augurs well. If, like me, you didn't know that what you really needed was an anon kink_meme, visit this Delicious node to browse for more.

Or not.

And in gloomy news: In order to keep Lucy from leaping up to maintain her customary broadcast re: neighborhood doings, we've closed all the blinds at her eye level. Also makes for darkness in the house. I'm glum. She's really glum. We do a potty run on a leash; otherwise she doesn't even lift her head when we come into the room. I don't know if she's emanating depression or I'm reading it, or both. Can't wait until we can start letting her be a dog again.

I've been enjoying podfics -- fanfics read aloud by fans (sometimes, but rarely, the fic's writer). Flannel-PJ type podfics really help me get to sleep.

I have a lot of experience narrating books, articles, and manuals for readers with print impairments, but podfic is *different*. I lack any creative writing skills, so podficcing looks like one way I could contribute to fandom.
So I'm soliciting beta readers for my first podfic )

Reply and I'll message you the MP3 link. Any comments you have to offer would be swell -- I'm a rank beginner!

Around the corner from me, Craig Schreiner, photog for the Wisconsin State Journal, captured this scene.

More than a foot of snow coats oaks, box alders, and other shrubbery, bent under the weight. A letter carrier sorts mail as he travels towards us on the unshoveled sidewalk, with a 40-foot oak broken off resting on the ground behind him.

Earlier I took my standard walk around the block, verrrrrry slowly. But that was 30 degrees and 25 mph ago.

It's MyGuy's 58th birthday, and he got to play in the snow all day! Sidewalks, patio for the dog, off the roof (we've had ice dams and geez-o-pete they are horrible). Will probably finish watching Stargate Atlantis unless Lucy's buddy, carrier Chris, makes it through with a Netflix.

We're so lucky!

Meta Fic Poetry

jesse_the_k: text: Be kinder than need be: everyone is fighting some kind of battle (expectant)
So, fanfic is pretty cool, but fanfic poetry is awesome.

Here's The Love Song of S Ray Kowalski, a totally-in-character Fraser/RayK post-CotW fic that just so happens to be an hilarious send-up of T.S. Elliot's moody muggle, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Open that sucker up in another tab, so you can appreciate what a great job [livejournal.com profile] metaphoracle did.

So I squeed about this to [livejournal.com profile] were_duck, and she kindly pointed me to an even more meta poem. "Searching" by [livejournal.com profile] linabean recreates that lost feeling one has when seeking help on a ficfinders/recfinders community, in this case Stargate: Atlantis.
