due south fanfic recs
Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 02:28 pmI've relentlessly pimped Due South to
sasha_feather in person, so here's the recs post I promised.
This took so long because I fail at resisting the urge to read 100 new fics just in case they need reccing as well
due South fandom is almost 15 years old, enough time for all the cliches to have been explored. The packed fanon base layer supports writers exploring new techniques, new insights, new joys & sorrows. At the end, links point back to a decade's worth of great recs from the first decade. Here I'll trend to newer writers, 100% RayK/Fraser, 80% slash.
I deeply identify with Fraser's auto-didacticism, his lack of childhood, his desire to believe in others' worth. So I love broken!Fraser stories with a hopeful ending, however slight:
Lucky for me, All of Us Drown was the first fic I read in the dS universe.
arrow00 debuted in this fandom in January 07, and all her writing is that good.
dsudis shows how a young Fraser learns The Way He Should Go to survive in the Northern winter.
Silver Bright, Quickly Fading explores Fraser's deeply disturbed behavior and RayK's loving support.
qe2's devastating peek at depression, Guns Don't Kill People, rings as true as a temple bell. There's some hope, though.
nos4a2no9's loving attention to Northern milieu and Native life makes her lonely Fraser in Wind from the South particularly believable -- and heartbreaking.
More than my heart was broken by the Angstiest Angstfest Ever:
spuffyduds's post-COTW ficlet-o'-power, This is a story that I tell myself.
secretlybronte writes our boys as believable adults, which hits my buttons. Her Ray is great ... well, let's read some! Dead on Arrival is a plotty, angsty epic with a lonely Fraser up North and Ray trying his damnedest to join him. Our Fair Share of Abuse starts with RayK as the fabulous detective he is, moves into Fraser's epic anti-migraine massage, and finishes with Ray raising difficult issues while simultaneously doing HOT hot hOt things.
Back from the brink, now ...
Beautifully plotted post-COTW fic that's funny, angsty and addresses class and race issues. Each time I reread
glossing's Gladly Beyond I enjoy it more.
pocketmouse's Common Wind blows between the North and somewhere, and it's not an ill wind.
My #1 genderfuck/bodyswap story is
damned_colonial's Chasing Fraser. It deliciously flips both male-female and queer-straight.
Slice by Carmen Kildare offers pie recipes and lovely alternating RayK & Fraser POVs.
A timely reminder from
cherryice in a series of Ray-vignettes through the years: Breathe (Don't Forget To).
Cartoons, drawings, little clay statues: multimedia!
Most vids leave me cold, "look pretty people" set to "gee I love this song." Two exceptions prove the rule.
sisabet's shattering Fraser/Victoria story, Icebound Stream. That's an imeem stream link in case her site is down. I think Sisabet does a better job in three minutes than Victoria's Secret did in 90.
The bar got even higher thanks to Goody Two Shoes.
pipsqueak and
laurashapiro crafted a hummable damn recruiting poster for due South fandom, as giggly as Icebound Streem is heartbreaking.
My fandom's writers feel free to fling letters around in intriguing ways, like this fanfic sonnet by
jadelennox and the romance Welcome to My World by
doll_revolution told via Post-It notes between two OFCs.
I promised new writers, but I can't resist one classic.
cesperanza is legendary in this fandom, not only because of the thirty-two funny, gripping, heart-warming stories she's written (so far, one hopes) but also because she's lovingly mothered the extensive due South community. My Speranza gateway drug is With 6 You Get Eggroll. Yes it's kidfic (and somehow palatable to childfree me). No summary can do it justice, just go read it now.
Newbies may wonder WTF \O/ is about. Backslash, cap O, slash represents "Paul Gross arms," so-called because he does a dual-arm, overhead salute in a music video. \O/ translates to far fuckin' out, or as the 30-somethings say, wOOt!
When you're ready for more, check out the more than 40 due South-related LJ communities:
The DS Noticeboard is a meta community, weekly summarizing new activity in all of them.
Searching for a fic on a particular topic or theme is as easy with the tags at ds_recfinders. And it doesn't get any more meta than this: an analysis of good recommenders for DS Recs, one of the final posts in a 365-day rec-a-thon at a now-dormant, but still-useful, comm.
And finally
spikedluv regularly updates the Newbies Guide to due South on LJ, and wow is it comprehensive.

Date: 2008-04-03 11:37 pm (UTC)Cesperanza is my favorite writer in SGA (Stargate Atlantis). I've read two or three of her DS fics, I think, and I love what she has to say generally. As you've noticed, a lot of the fic writers are the same across these two fandoms. And there is *so* much SGA fic right now!
(So when do you want to get together and watch SGA? Then I can rec stories for you. *snerk*)
