Drawn & Quarterly, Montreal 2007
Streamlined drawings magically evoke the company town way up north in Quebec, built to service a huge hydroelectric project which was mechanized in the 1970s. The story is told in delicious hand-lettered type placed carefully all over the page. Somehow this work was seamlessly translated from the French, which must have required redrawing many panels.
This graphic novel captures a utopian vision of harmony between capitalist and workers. Homey palette of browns, oranges and cream frame illustrations reminiscent of 30s magazine sketches crossed with Le Petit Chat cartoons. The human faces lack perspective while the architectural elements are precise enough to form working drawings. History, mystery, dreamy and precise drafting—what's not to love?
