Yes, you must join MetaFilter to comment -- the one-time $5 entry fee (combined with constant human moderation) is why MetaFilter discussions are more useful than most on the public Internet.

Please do! Your perspective would be valuable. I always learn something when I visit there, and on the front page, members can systematically hide all discussion of US politics.

* I can't quite recall the different durations for different sub-sites; I think fanfare.metafilter.com, for instance, where people discuss movies and so on, doesn't close threads after a month.

In fact Fanfare posts never close, since someone is always arriving at a great book, podcast, movie. Tv show, u.s.w.
