...which kinda breaks my brain. There is goodness in the world, as there is in each of you. The whole deal--all the cards, all the cash, even the coins--which I'd left at an Albuquerque WalMart cash register 13 days ago. No return address. What is the appropriate celebration?

I had a roommate once who told a similar story. She'd grown up in Pakistan and they had a car that was stolen. There was a bunch of cash inside the car's console.

The car was recovered, and all the cash was there. She said her family donated the cash to charity in order to "avoid the evil eye."

How wonderful! What a relief! How do you want to celebrate?

I mailed someone's journal back to them once. Found it in a national park, and it had an address in it. Don't think I put a return address on it. Interesting to see the other side of something like that.

Good to be reminded that our small acts of kindness make a big impact.

After you have danced around in your room with mindless joy? Keep an eye open for an opportunity do do something you see as equally good for someone you don't know. See if you can keep it anonymous, too. And if you found that was fun, do it again sometime.

Oh, that's lovely, and re-affirms my belief in the essential goodness of people. I agree that paying it forward when you can is a good thing, but of course you do that already. :-)

See, that's what I figured. You're already constantly paying it forward. This was the goodwill vacuum rewarding you :)

Pay it forward in a capacity you find fitting? First thing I thought of, and it's sticking with me.

This is just sharding amazing. :D Bless whoever returned your wallet, my gosh!

Yay! ^_^

What is the appropriate celebration?

Donate some money to a local foodbank or other meaningful-to-you local charity?

Modest Needs came to mind, also. They provide small grants to individuals facing a temporary crisis who would otherwise fall into permanent poverty.

The Philadelphia Community Bail Fund might also be worth a look.

That's great! Very faith-in-humanity-restoring.

To celebrate, I vote random act of kindness (in person/in kind, or a donation to whatever fundraiser, cause, or organisation seems right to you) but also pizza or ice cream or whatever you like to eat when you're celebrating.

I like all of the "pay it forward" comments; I was going to say that, but I also know (like other commenters) that you do that, and Your Guy does it also.

So I'm thinking the best (or another?) thing you could do is write to various public officials, especially ones like Our Leaders who decry the good in people, and just tell them the story. Or find someone with a major FB or Twitter following to retell it, with the spin you put on it ("People try to tell us this doesn't happen, but it does.")
