I know that Feedburner offers a service to do this, but that means giving my subscriber email away.

Is there a way to do this using only my own stuff?

I could get a person's email in a screened comment.

Then add it to a private email list.

And then maybe have the RSS feed somehow trigger sending an email?

Oh wise techies, can you put the pieces together?

This is fairly easy to achieve using IFTTT and the RSS feed. Only public entries will get caught, of course.

Are you trying to send this notification to multiple people who've requested it from you, or just facilitate other people setting it up for themselves? Either is doable, it just affects how the applet gets set up.

Hoping to let people set it up for themselves, but I'll fall back to the Gmail hack described below.

Deeply aggravatingly, IFTTT no longer allows base users to share their applets. However, anyone with an IFTTT account can set this up for themselves using a recipe of If (RSS feed) Then (Email). IFTTT will generate an email to their account email address based on new entries on the RSS feed.

I'll try to document the process of setting up such an applet using screenshots tonight.

You should be able to do this with a combination of If This Then That and a gmail account. The steps would be:

1) Use an IFTTT recipe to send email to a designated gmail account every time your Dreamwidth RSS feed updates.

2) Set up a filter in gmail to forward messages from that feed to your designated recipient automatically.

It's alternatively possible to have IFTTT just use your a gmail account send out an email to a list of up to 20 accounts.

If you post by email, you can simply cc the people who want to get email.
