Low Effort Interaction Here on Dreamwidth

Since Dreamwidth’s design and code are old enough to vote, it lacks the easy interaction for lurkers–the Like, Star, Boost or +1 buttons.

Although I’m a chatty person, I sometimes draft and erase and draft and erase many comments because of anxiety.

It’s fine to comment with just <3 or listening or cool

All users get 15 icons, and I often switch mine up as part of my comments.

If you have a paid account, you can create a Kudos button for your posts. Here’s one I stole from melannen

Love love love the kudos poll. Have polls always been paid-user? I could have sworn I posted some back in the day and I've never paid.

I don't know where one goes to get icons these days, but I like the idea of getting back into using them as part of the context of the comment (until then, wolfermelon 5ever).

Making great icons requires great skill. Fortunately, making so-so icons is easy, as I have learned, using nothing more elaborate than Preview on Mac.

I clicked through their recs and saved a few, but right now am too intimidated by the volume to pursue more. I may just make some crops of instagram photos of the monsters for now.

You can post polls on paid communities even if you're a free user, so you might have done some on comms? But afaik on DW at least polls on personal journals are always paid-only (except maybe in early beta?) Polls are the first thing I miss if I get lazy and let my paid account lapse.

I like the lack of a like-button. Are you sure it's not a choice not to have them? We can use our words, even if we want or need to keep things low-effort. A single word can say so much. Some examples of short one-word replies that convey much more emotion than a like-button:

- Cool
- Yay!
- Boo
- Wow
- Aww!
- Huh.
- Yeah!
- Damn.
- Hugs
- Right!
- Nope.
- Sweet!

I use icons that represent me in some way. Often I'll try to use the most fitting one. I do not use photographs of other people as my icon; that just feels odd to me. I'm probably atypical in that.

I know LJ didn't have "Like" buttons when DW forked—I can't speak to the conscious decision aspect, and would love to know.
