jesse_the_k: Black dog staring overhead at squirrel out of frame (BELLA expectant)

I'm thrilled that Markdown simplifies formatting your DW posts has proved popular and helpful. I didn't explore all Markdown's features to keep it short. I regret that now. I'm drafting a "Markdown: the sequel" post with the remaining features. In a better timeline, I would have written "Markdown: the novel," integrating the sequel stuff in the first post. I want to maximize reference utility for DW users in the next decade. Three ways to do this occur to me, and I bet you have a better idea.

Plan 1:

  • write & post markdown the sequel, with a link to post 1
  • edit post 1 with a link to the sequel
  • as corrections appear to the sequel, edit them in

Plan 2:

  • write & post "markdown the sequel", with a link to post 1
  • edit in corrections as they appear
  • copy out post 1 and edit it together with the sequel to create "Markdown the novel"
  • paste the novel into post 1 url

Plan 3:

Create one entry and post it in [site community profile] dw_nifty

So, gentle reader--tell me what to do!

I voted for [site community profile] dw_nifty because it's currently underused, but would add a suggestion of adding the link to the original old post as it's being linked around a lot!

I like the idea of two posts. The one you did could be "very basic easy markdown" and then there could be an "If you want to know more!" post. I find mile long novel posts intimidating to think about, tbh, and liked how short your first post was.

I vote for 1+3. That will serve the most people and keep the existing links to the original post useful.

I think I would do 3, but add a link to the dw_nifty "novel" post to your first markdown entry, too, and announce that post to your journal also. and maybe even I'd actually also duplicate that post to your journal too, if I were you - the only way to not lose your work ever is to put it in some place you control. But of course that means more posting work...

I voted for plan 1 -- it's how most people whose blogs I read serialize fiction and so on -- but I'd combine that with plan 3: combine the posts and put them someplace else, with backlinks to the original so that people can find any comments they missed.
