Thanks to [personal profile] runpunkrun, who alerted me to the fascinating conversation-in-progress about

Named Markup Formats

https://dw-dev.dreamwidth.org/222342.html

[personal profile] roadrunnertwice is planning out the replumbing of the editor we use to make and reply to posts. I'm thrilled that this will include supporting markdown for posts and comments. There are many other benefits, including not borking antique @mentions.

If you use a client to post here, and particularly if you use [eta: extensive precise HTML to create complex formats] in your posts, please check out the discussion.

ETA! Now Implemented on the nifty dropdown menu after the subject line:

  • casual html
  • markdown
  • raw html

I don't know enough about that to understand all that post, and trying to understand it is making me upset.

My only opinion: if they take away casual html and go to markdown, with no choice, I'm going to be really pissed.

My understanding is that based on [personal profile] roadrunnertwice's proposal there would be multiple choices available, and one of them will be your standard making-a-post/comment-on-DW that you're using right now. So you won't have to change a thing...unless you use a client to post to DW, but even that will probably default to the current standard.

Okay, good. I just was worried, b/c you said people who use HTML should go look at it, but then I couldn't understand it, and I started getting "It's important for me to look at this thing I can't understand stress." If what they want is an "Use HTML or Markdown" toggle (plus a bunch of technical stuff that won't affect most users), then that's fine.
