boost: Meta Clouds

My other online hang-out is ask.metafilter.

I enjoy watching strangers asking questions and receiving advice, and have chimed in with expertise when I think I have some. I love that it's an all-text old-school site.

I don't like that past site owners have supported loathsome posters, with little regard when posters demonstrate bigotry towards disabled, trans*, queer, Black, Native, people of color and unfortunately other categories. Many folks left the site. Some members pushed back on this, and the new owner, Jessamyn West, plus an elected 12-member volunteer steering committee, is doing a last-chance fundraising drive.

Towards that goal: Some members are sponsoring deep-dive posts containing scores of delightful links that celebrate "the best of the web."

My favorite so far is (surprise!) all about nacreous clouds:

It's good to hear about a site which found a solution to clean itself up and provide a better experience. Somehow we don't hear about those events amidst all the garbage fires.

Oh, my God.

(I approve deeply of the subject and even of the title, but oh, my God.)

I am so glad to hear that the new owner is working to change the site culture. I took against MetaFilter very early on when I saw a very dear friend bullied by commenters over their PTSD and never really picked up the habit of even dropping by after that.

Even when the world is afire, puns are helpful.

I've spent more than a decade dropping in, enjoying some bits, and then recoiling at bullshit supported by the I-only-wish-they-were-lurking pilers-on.

The founder didn't seem to care; his successor couldn't seem to deploy his power for the benefit of all the members. Jessamyn's done remarkable work all over the net for decades. Will report back :,)

I had to abandon metafilter for a totally personal reason:

I can't stop once I get in there.

It's literally a time eating black hole for me. So many interesting things. So many odd links. It's like a dive to the bottom of the internet!

It's a deep, deep well
