New Wheelchair
Thursday, 18 June 2009 06:38 pmIt's that time of the decade: I'm starting the process of getting a new powerchair.
It's exciting and terrifying at the same time. On the one hand, there are brochures and websites to peruse, peers to consult, plus/minus charts to fill out. On the other hand, I won't know my working budget until my insurance company decides how much to cover, getting a test drive will require hours and hours of phone calls, and when I'm all done I'll have the pleasure of poking holes in and scraping paint off my walls for a couple months until I get proficient with the new controls.
On the plus side, chairs have got a whole lot more functional: Mark E Smith, who's a life-long chair user and wheelchair designer provides a funny and hair-raising account of the early technology. Thank goodness for those early adopters!
