So, I'm back from Up North. It was fairly bug-free, because it was so cold we mostly stayed indoors. Swam once. Boo hoo. Did make nine necklaces, however. Ate very well. Slept copiously. Our host, BarbB, commented that in the past my contribution to packing has been sitting in the corner; this time I was able to pack up my entire studio and then unpack it on the same day. Progress!

Am now facing 100-item inbox and movingly very slowly.

Life without internet access reduces my pain and anxiety at least 33%. I don't want to lose the fascinating convos here, but I'd like it to be at lower cost. Suggestions entertained (maybe even given drinks & desserts)

I'm so glad you had a good time!

What is it exactly about the internet that is causing the pain and anxiety?

Of course you can reduce the amount of time you spend online, but that seems like a knee-jerk suggestion that is hard to implement.

Another suggestion I have is to spend time online while with other people. So if there is something you are reading that is causing you to be anxious, you can say it out loud to the person sitting next to you, and get a reality check. I am willing to sit with you while we both read DW, for example!

Um, I'm not sure what else, but I will think about it.

Yeah, the internet is definitely something double-edged. I'm going to spend a month without it now, and I think that's definitely good for me.

Hmm, suggestions. I found that a break program on the computer (I use one called Workrave) is good to reduce the tension that comes from sitting at the computer for a long time. If you obey the program, that is. : )

But that's just for physical stuff, not the mental.

I tend to stick to doing internet in chunks. So, I haven't read my LJ flist in a month, but I tend to keep up well with DeeWee. Less stupid here.

I find Workrave (workrave.org) very helpful for rationing my computer time to reduce pain. It's shareware, intended to prevent RSI, and it had the unexpected effect of reducing my emotional strain as well as hand strain. It tells me when to take breaks, and when to stop for the day, based on how many minutes I actually have my hands on the keyboard...so I don't argue with myself that I was just goofing off and not really writing and should finish this one thing before I take a break. You can set the break frequency however you like, as well as the hours of computer time per day.
