Dinking around with Google Plus. The invitations are throttled with some arcane system — I can try an invite but not promise when it will actually let you connect.
It has some interesting features — excellent layers of who-sees-what; low-key and coherent info about the privacy of anything you post; and possibly the winner app: hangouts. Up to five people with webcams & mics can share a conversation. Quality is not good enough for sign language, but there is a parallel text chat as well as "let's watch YouTube together." Enough to save bicoastal relationships? Time will tell.
