Thanks for the great links in this post! I had a long discussion about this with the director of my library just this week. We are balancing the reality of difficult budget cuts with the need to "keep up" and provide a wider range of ebooks (both our own collection and the recommendations I make to patrons, such as Project Gutenberg, etc.) -- purchasing e-readers for library patrons to check out is something desirable, but as of yet no consensus about which e-readers to buy.

I'm happy to be useful.

When Andrew Carnegie was polishing his robber-baron image by spreading money all over the U.S. to fund free public libraries, books and maps were truly too expensive for the "average working person." Now a net connection and an e-reader put uncountable things within almost-reach, not to mention the fabulous free things already on tap.

I can't imagine there are any easy answers available! (But the Amazon billionaire could certainly afford to donate a whole passel of Kindles for public library use.)
