jesse_the_k: White woman riding black Quantum 4400 powerchair off the right edge, chased by the word "powertool" (JK 56 powertool)

I operate my powerchair with a joystick, like a gaming control but much sturdier, smarter, and costlier. It’s a metal post sticking out of a rubber hood. One can readily change the handle that attaches to the metal post. My joystick came with a carrot–shaped handle. I was looking for a better fit that didn’t require me to pinch my fingers. One can purchase ugly alternatives at the durable medical store for less than $100.

The High Road: 3D printed for US$ 80

It’s a niche ripe for 3D printing. Joe Olson, a mechanical engineering student and quadriplegic, has already gone there with his patented “Ergo Joystick.” It’s a super lightweight, breathable plastic swoop with a tube on the underside that slides over the joystick stem. The top of the swoop fits smoothly in the palm of one’s hand. There’s enough resistance in the swoop so no grip is needed; the weight of your arm keeps your hand firmly on top of the metal post.

The Low Road: mutilate a US$ 1 practice golfball

In the end, I went for a simpler option: a modified practice golf ball. These 42mm bright yellow spheres are composed of high density non-slip foam. Golf enthusiasts like MyGuy can practice their swing in the basement without driving holes in the wall.

I used a razor knife to cut an X, and then an awl to make a thin hole into the center. I jammed that thin tunnel on to my joystick’s metal post, and rested the palm of my hand on top. Unmodified, it was too high and cocked my wrist back. I sliced 3mm off the ball’s bottom (with a serrated bread knife) and retested the fit. For me it was just right when I’d cut off around 12mm. The flattened part is forced onto the joystick post. I now rest my palm on the round top of the ball. The foam offers enough resistance that my hand stays in place. I can use the larger muscles of my shoulder to control the joystick, minimizing the strain on the tiny muscles in my hand and wrist. The screaming yellow color warns adults not to touch but unfortunately is catnip to any toddler in sight.

Oh wow, you're right! Impressive. Bet you could 3D print one of those pretty simply...too bad I'm terrible with 3D CAD :D
