New Glasses!
Friday, 21 May 2021 07:05 pmMy Silhouette glasses weigh a mere 17g. Working with a talented optician, we copied the round lenses from my previous pair and grafted them on to the TMA titanium minimalist style. Both the bridge and temples bolt directly on to the lens. The temples are a single swoop of titanium without a hinge in a gray-green that disappears into my hair. The result is a pair of ~40mm diameter round high plus glasses with higher plus lined bifocal, chock full of prism and astigmatism.
I think this is the first time since I cut off my braids that I don't have to fuss with how my hair covers the temples.
Twenty grams makes a big difference: my orange reading glasses weigh 37 g, which is still darn light, but wow.

Answer hazy, ask again later!
I spent the last four weeks with 2-year-old glasses, so I mostly closed my lesser eye. I think I won't know how I feel about the script until that reflex fades. And then my magic brain has to learn how to ignore the tiny bars where the "frame" is screwed on to the lens.

Date: 23/05/2021 01:38 am (UTC)I'm doing that "closing the lesser eye" thing when reading my phone for games, I notice. I guess I should get a prescription for close reading but ugh, then 3 separate pairs of glasses???

Date: 22/05/2021 03:51 pm (UTC)It’s crazy how much difference the weight and fit of glasses matters. I ordered my last pair from one of those cheap online sellers when I had very little money, and then only recently took advantage of the fact that I now can afford real glasses and got a new pair from an actual optician. The difference is night and day!
Absolutely
Date: 22/05/2021 09:41 pm (UTC)The 2% I understand about how we see things emphasizes how little work happens in our eyes. Most all of it is in our brain. Of course substandard brain appliances make us feel lousy!

Date: 22/05/2021 09:42 pm (UTC)Thanks --- and now I've experienced the dramatic weight loss, I can't imagine going back to regular frames.

Date: 26/05/2021 04:59 am (UTC)I just had a 2 hour (!) eye exam and emerged clutching two new prescriptions, one for distance, one for computers. I was willing to spring for one set of new frames, but apparently they only have big and/or cat-eye ones nowadays, neither of which work for me. I read up-thread about the online glasses not being as good, but I'm tempted to try it for the computer glasses.
Thanks
Date: 26/05/2021 07:19 pm (UTC)Yikes! Two hours at the eyeball factory sounds exhausting.
Words can't express how annoyed the current fashion trends make me. I suffered through cat-eyes for my first decade in glasses, the dinner-plates for my second and I'm ready to never see either of them again.
If my custom rounds hadn't been available, I was willing to go with landscape-mode ovals, something like these Zennis Titanium Rimless 372814
... hmm, I don't remember the rimless being there before ...
Will you have bifocals on your distance?
Re: Thanks
Date: 27/05/2021 02:21 am (UTC)No bifocals (yet). I'm worried about strain on my neck from having to look through different parts of the lens, and I'm still making do by taking off my (distance) glasses. My big concession this time was to add an astigmatic correction, so we'll see how that goes.
Re: Thanks
Date: 28/07/2021 07:29 pm (UTC)No bifocals - at this point it works better for me to peer under the glasses. Masks do get in the way of that, unfortunately, making it more difficult to read small print on packages in the grocery store. I suppose there eventually will be bifocals in my future, *sigh*.
Re: Thanks
Date: 28/07/2021 08:48 pm (UTC)Holy shit! $45 compared to $695.
I hope they work out wonderfully!
The lack of a hinge is generally a plus -- one fewer thing to break -- but it makes the glasses tricky to fold into a case. I ended up getting a huge case designed for sunglasses. I put my specs lens down on the big side, and can restrain the springy temples with one hand while closing the case with the other.
