jesse_the_k: Baby wearing black glasses bigger than head (eyeglasses baby)

Since 1960 I've been wearing complicated thick glasses which attempt to correct my divergent eyes. No matter how well made, when my eyes tire I get double vision anyway. I’ve become accustomed to closing my left eye, depending on the stronger right eye. This year I decided to fuck it. I was able to optimize my vision by using other tools in addition to the glasses.

New Glasses!

My Silhouette glasses weigh a mere 17g. Working with a talented optician, we copied the round lenses from my previous pair and grafted them on to the TMA titanium minimalist style. Both the bridge and temples bolt directly on to the lens. The temples are a single swoop of titanium without a hinge in a gray-green that disappears into my hair. The result is a pair of ~40mm diameter round high plus glasses with higher plus lined bifocal, chock full of prism and astigmatism.

I think this is the first time since I cut off my braids that I don't have to fuss with how my hair covers the temples.

My eyes are sensitive to light—bright lights trigger migraine and anxiety. It’s the major reason I’m almost always wearing a hat.

I’m farsighted, astigmatic, and I have double vision, so my glasses are thick. I think I’ve tried every possible light-management approach:

  • contacts & sunglasses (not enough vision correction)
  • Rx glasses with customized clipon sunglasses (terrible fit, always losing them)
  • gray or brown dark Rx glasses (distracting color distortion, trying to track two pairs of glasses was hard)
  • Rx glasses with Cocoons and Fitovers (effective and least expensive, but still must track two pairs of glasses)

In the past I've rocketed among different frame styles and colors. This is the least variation in new glasses for at least three decades: I like the almost-round look, with the darkest part of the frame underneath, and just a hint of color in the frame above the temple line. My previous ones were were tortoise shell on the bottom and violet metal on top; these new ones are matte black and matte gray metal.

These new ones are more comfortable, even though they weigh 8 more grams than last pair. The optician installed "pillow nose pads": large, silicone ovals with air inside. My pressure sores went away in two weeks! (My Rx is very thick, with astigmatism and four different prisms.)

The bag has a "gatemouth," like a doctor's bag--a frame with two spring hinges stays open to offer a completely visible interior. It's 6"h by 6"d by 14" wide. It holds my iPad as well as all the other necessities. When closed, the hinge forms a rack for my iPad mini giving my hands a break.

I stumbled on Ruthy with a "doctor bag" search on Etsy. Her needlework is excellent, she accepted my customizations gracefully, I got it in sixteen days for less than US$100 from Israel. A+++ will bag with her again. Check out her stuff at
